"A Simple Christmas" Advent Devotional

Christmas is only a month away!

That statement can illicit two responses: dread or joy. For many people, they can’t wait for Christmas Day - and all that comes with it. The Christmas season is the high point on the calendar for many people - Christian and non-Christian alike. For others, a statement like that brings panic, heavy sighing, or frustration. With Christmas comes busy schedules, financial questions, family drama, and multiple gatherings where you have to rustle up another hors d'oeuvres recipe to wow the crowd at the company dinner or staff lunch. But what if it didn’t have to be that way? What if there was a way you could have the joy of Christmas regardless of your schedule?

That’s where this sermon series for Advent enters - a hope for all of us out there who truly want to celebrate Christmas, but every year it’s the same: Thanksgiving to Christmas Day is more of a rat race, rather than a cozy sleigh ride through a winter wonderland. It’s simple.

This year’s sermon series is called “A Simple Christmas.” The goal of this year is to slow us down and simplify. We want to celebrate a “simple” Christmas this year. You may be asking yourself just how that is done. I’m glad you asked: we simply adore Christ.

Each week, we will walk in the footsteps of four major characters in the Nativity story of Jesus found in the Gospels: Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, and the Wise Men as they simply adore the Christ child. Each person or persons bring a different perspective as they adored the child who would bring life and light to the world through His death and resurrection. We, too, will take time this Advent season to slow down and simply adore Christ and His majesty.

Each day, this devotional will lead you through scripture, a short thought or illustration, and a question to consider in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the holidays. Each Sunday, you’ll find the Advent reading that will be read on Sunday morning as we light the Advent wreath during worship service - use this as a companion to worship each Sunday during the season - bring it with you!

Join us each Sunday at 10:45AM at FBC Siloam Springs for Advent. On Christmas Eve, we will celebrate communion together during our Candlelight Christmas Eve service. I trust it will be a blessing to you and your family as we simply adore Christ for all He has done and what His birth truly means for us!

Simply Adoring Him,
Pastor Jeremy DeGroot
